Yorkies and Hypoglycemia

One of the greatest dangers that your new Yorkie puppy will face is developing Hypoglycemia - or low blood sugar. This is caused when there is a sudden drop in blood sugar, which could be due to stress or, most often, not eating enough. It is important to ensure that your new Yorkie puppy is properly fed and eats on a regular schedule, and if he/she does not eat at mealtime, you need to have a syringe and baby food available to hand feed. Additionally, you should always keep Caro syrup available and, when in doubt on your puppy’s condition, give Caro syrup directly or mix with the baby food. ALWAYS SEEK THE ADVICE AND CARE OF A LICENSED VETERINARIAN.
With proper care and attention, a Yorkie puppy should never be lost to this preventable condition, and most breeders will not replace your puppy since this condition can so easily be prevented. The danger zone passes at approximately 3-4 months of age; the smaller the Yorkie puppy, the more susceptible to this heart-wrenching condition.
